Rivers of Light Dining Package at Tiffins in Disney’s Animal Kingdom – A Dining Review

On our recent trip to Walt Disney World we decided to do the Rivers Of Light dining package at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and from the two eligible restaurants we choose Tiffins. We had been once before and had a really good experience and thought we would give it another try. First let me tell you a little about Tiffins.

Tiffins is a signature restaurant located near to the entrance of Pandora – The World of Avatar. The restaurant is African themed both in cuisine and the visible theming. For me personally, it is that level of detail that makes it special. Both times when we have visited the setting has been calm and relaxing which, is often difficult to find inside a theme park; even the signature restaurants are often busy!

As I said at the outset, we selected the dining package which entitles each member of the dining party to reserved seating at the Rivers of Light (ROL) evening show. We were also on the regular Disney Dining Plan (DDP). If on the regular dining plan you will need to use two table service credits per person for the meal and each person will be entitled to an appetizer, an entrée, a dessert and a beverage.  On the regular dining plan, your meal with or without the dining package will cost you the same amount of credits, so assuming you want to see the evening show you may as well always select the dining package where available. If you are paying out of pocket there is a price difference for the dining package.

Since we had already been there we received a welcome back card signed by the servers sitting on our table, which I though was a lovely touch. Something that’s not necessarily needed but certainly adds to the overall experience.

So on to the food:

From the Kids Menu – The Fish of the Day  (Sustainable fish with rice and vegetables)

And for Dessert

South American Chocolate Ganache $12- (Caramelized Banana, Cocoa Nib Tuile)

Sorbet Tasting $9 (Kaffir Lime Syrup, Passion Fruit Curd, crunchy Vanilla Crouton)

From the kids menu  – Neapolitan Macaroon $6.00 (Strawberry and Vanilla Macaroon with White Chocolate Mousse, Pâte de Fruits, and Macerated Strawberries)

Every meal we ate was exceptional. There was not one meal that was under par. Each was well presented, and tasted good. Even the kids meal was nicely done and very tasty. The cuisine is African inspired so may not suit plain tastes. That being said, none of the entrées were overly spicy. The server was also extremely attentive; he knew the menu well and was able to offer good suggestions when we asked. Finally the décor and theming of the restaurant also makes it an enjoyable place to spend a few hours. It has been done extremely well and completely adds to the overall dining experience.

Near the end of our meal the server gave us our reserved passes for the Rivers of Light show. The entrance to the reserved seating area for all dining packages is close to the Finding Nemo theater. Having the reserved seating was great because it gave us more time to enjoy other areas of the park, knowing that we didn’t need to allow time to wait in the standby queue but we were still guaranteed a great viewing spot. To be honest, if I didn’t have the reserved seating and it was a busy night, I probably would not chose to spend lots of time queuing standby. The show is enjoyable, but I personally don’t think it is as good as the other shows in the other parks. One thing I would like to point out is that it is still recommended that you queue up approximately 30 minutes prior to the show starting. Even though the area is reserved, the earlier you go, the closer to the front you will be. However, on our night there were lots of people filtering in very close to the start and still finding seats.

So in review, I really enjoyed our dining experience at Tiffins and I will absolutely be returning on our next visit. There are many signatures on Disney property that have people debating whether they are worth the two credits on the dining plan. Personally I feel that this restaurant is absolutely worth the two credits. You will enjoy great theming, a lovely relaxed atmosphere and really enjoyable food. If you select the dining package option, you will also get reserved seating to the evening show Rivers of Light. On the dining plan you will use the same two credits regardless of whether you select the show package. So if you had already planned to see the show, you may as well try and get the dining package. It is certainly a lovely way to end what can be an otherwise long and hectic day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom! If you are paying out of pocket, then the dining package will cost you more; however, regardless of whether you are wanting to do the dining package, if you are simply looking for a new dining option at Animal Kingdom then I would still thoroughly recommend Tiffins. Bon Appetit!
