It is the most wonderful time of the year, when the weather cools down, the lights begin to twinkle, and decorations transform the Disney Parks into the coziest holiday escape. A quick stroll through Downtown Disney or Disney Springs will fill your senses with seasonal cheer. Warm notes of cinnamon and gingerbread drift through the air, festive music puts a spring in your step, and once you enter the parks, the costumes and decor create that unmistakable winter magic. Even so, neither Anaheim nor Orlando resembles the snow-covered hills featured on holiday merch designs. The temperatures can be unpredictable, and that is where winter packing gets a little trickier than it sounds.
If you have ever visited the Disney Parks between mid-November and mid-January, you know exactly what I mean. I have spent many trips in this window, and the weather always keeps me guessing. I have walked through Magic Kingdom in the days after Christmas when it hit the 90s one afternoon and the 60s the next. On the opposite coast, fall and spring often feel cooler and more consistent than December or January. After years of mismatched forecasts and more than a few packing regrets, I have put together a list of five items we almost always forget to bring on winter Disney vacations and immediately wish we had.
Let’s start with swimwear. Yes, in winter. Whether you are staying at a resort with an inviting outdoor pool glistening in the midday sun or a hotel with a warm indoor pool calling your name after a long park day, swimwear always comes in handy. This habit started for me about 15 years ago at a Good Neighbor Hotel with a hot tub perfectly positioned for watching Disneyland fireworks. I learned my lesson that night, and now I tuck in swimmers for everyone on every trip. Trust me, you will be glad you did.
Next on the list is sunscreen. Cooler weather can trick you into thinking you are safe from the sun, but holiday lines often stretch into open areas with very little shade. Your skin can still take a beating even if the air feels crisp. Add sunscreen to your morning routine, and for those wearing makeup, include an SPF product so you stay protected throughout the day. Your future self will thank you.
Sunglasses are another easy-to-forget item. My husband always leaves his at home and then regrets it about ten minutes into the day. Winter sun can be blinding, and the quick transitions from dark indoor attractions to bright outdoor walkways can be surprisingly harsh. A good pair of sunglasses makes navigating outdoor queues so much more comfortable.
Now for the most essential basic of all. Do not forget deodorant. As we have established, the weather can swing quickly, and even on days with fake snow floating in the air, you may find yourself warmer than expected as you crisscross the parks. Living out of a suitcase with limited outfit options already tests your freshness, so make sure everyone in your group covers the basics. It does not need to feel like a hot summer day for this one to matter.
Last, but absolutely not least, toss a simple lip balm into your daily park bag. Cooler air outside mixed with constant air conditioning inside can dry out your skin fast, and cracked lips can sneak up on anyone. I always carry a long-lasting, no color balm because everyone ends up asking for it, including the men in our family.
These five small additions can make a world of difference during a winter visit. What are your tips and tricks for packing the unexpected needs of a cold-weather Disney Parks vacation?
