Imagineering Shares Behind the Scenes Look at Monstropolis Construction

Walt Disney Imagineering has shared a new construction update video offering the first look behind the walls at Monstropolis, the upcoming land currently being built at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World, coming alongside today’s bigger story on the land with more details, including a hint at what’s still to come at this year’s D23 Expo.

The video features Senior Creative Director of Concept Design Scott Mallwitz, who walks through the land’s story and design direction. Mallwitz describes Monstropolis as a fully realized monster city, complete with storefronts, shops, schools, and theaters that reflect an urban environment… but with a monster twist.

One highlight is Mike and Sully’s Walk to Work, as seen in the original film – a route that takes guests from the pair’s brownstone all the way to Monsters, Inc., ending at the building’s rotunda. Architectural details throughout the land include scales, claws, and horns worked into facades and finishes.

The land is set in a post-scare world where laughter has replaced screams as Monstropolis’ energy source. H.U.M.A.N. Day, an in-world event marking the first time humans have been invited into Monstropolis, serves as the narrative backdrop for the entire area, with the Department of Human Monster Relations playing a central role in that story.

One of the images released earlier today features the “Monstropolis Horn” newspaper front page. On the top portion of the page, the recently-confirmed Harry Hausen’s restaurant, and just what exactly will be showing inside the Globe Theater (previously the Muppet*Vision Theater), is cited to have more details on page 8, column 15. This translates to August 15, which is the day the Disney Experiences panel will take place at this year’s D23 Expo. Looks like we’ll be hearing much more about Monstropolis later this summer!

The video also includes a first peek inside The Magic of Disney Animation, which is also still under construction. Watch the full “Pardon Our Pixie Dust” from Walt Disney Imagineering here:
