Buzz Lightyear returns to Earth
by Leah ZanollaAug 24, 2009
Buzz Lightyear is on his way home. Last May, Buzz joined the Discovery shuttle crew that was headed to the International Space Station. Buzz's mission was planned to help foster students' interest in math and science. A special website was designed to allow the kids to follow along with Buzz's trip. On the site they were able to solve problems to load the shuttle, complete scavenger hunts and control Buzz's movements.
Disney says, "Buzz is now the longest serving "astronaut" in space ever, and will treated as a hero upon his return." The Magic Kingdom will host a ticker tape parade in his honor on October 2nd. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin will be there for a book signing, as well as some of the astronauts who flew with Buzz Lightyear on the Discovery.
Disney and NASA will hold a contest for students to design a Buzz Lightyear Mission Patch that will be used on a future shuttle mission.
