Disneyland receives environmental award

Disneyland Resort in California has been awarded the 2009 Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award. This is California's most prestigious environmental honor, given for voluntary accomplishments and leadership in conserving California's natural resources.

"I applaud the Disneyland Resort for their wonderful commitment to our state's commerce and environment. They are an inspiration to many and I thank them for their outstanding leadership," said Governor Schwarzenegger.

Disneyland was awarded this honor based on several "green" processes at the Resort.

When emptying California Adventure's Paradise Bay, Disneyland had the water purified and placed in holding tanks until it was time to refill the lagoon. This process cost the company six times more than simply dumping the water in the ocean, which they were given a permit for, but chose not to use.

Disneyland saves 200,000 gallons of petroleum diesel fuel a year for their steam trains and riverboat by recycling the cooking oil from their restaurants. The used oil is processed into a special biodiesel fuel that reduces emissions from the trains by up to 80 percent.

In March 2009, a new eco-friendly bakery was opened that uses all Energy Star-rated appliances, skylights to reduce electricity and heating costs and a parking lot equipped with a rain collection system that provides water for the surrounding landscape. The bakery also recycles its outdated baked goods and turns them into usable products such as livestock feed.
