Hot nacho cheese lawsuit to be settled?

Court filings earlier this week show the parents and guardians of Isaiah Harris have asked the court to approve a $50,000 settlement of the "hot nacho cheese" lawsuit filed against Walt Disney Parks and Resorts earlier this year. The lawsuit alleged that Isaiah was burned by scalding hot nacho cheese sauce served while the family was on vacation at Walt Disney World. The proposed settlement, which requires court approval because Isaiah is a minor, explained that his parents paid $483.00 for medical treatment after the incident. Court documents also stated that Isaiah had "recovered completely from the effects of the injuries," that he has "no permanent injuries," and "will not require further treatment." Isaiah will receive $33,000 from the settlement, while his parents will receive $17,000.00. Harris' attorneys have asked to receive 33 percent of these amounts. If the settlement is approved, Isaiah's portion will be invested so that he receives $10,000 in 2023 (when he turns 18), $15,000 in 2026 and about $22,000 in 2030. Occurring about 3 months after the lawsuit was filed, the total settlement amount is believed to be less than it would have cost Disney to defend the lawsuit in a jury trial.
