Rights to early version of Mickey may be unprotected

Disney's iconic image, Mickey Mouse, may not have full copyright protection.

According to legal analysts who have reviewed Steamboat Willie's title and copyright line, there are three potential holders of the rights, which nullifies Disney's claim to this early version of Mickey Mouse.

"Steamboat Willie" was the first time that sound was synchronized with a cartoon. It appears that Disney did not properly comply with the applicable copyright laws at that time, leaving this early version of Mickey Mouse unprotected.

There is no doubt within the legal community that Disney will fight anyone who challenges their claim to all images of Mickey.

The Associate Dean of University of Pittsburgh Law, Michael Madison, stated "Law and equity might line up on the side of forfeiture. However, Disney has enough ammunition on its side to dissuade all but the most well-financed competitor, or any but the most committed public interest advocates, from challenging Mickey."
