The Orlando Police Department and one of its officers are being sued for an unspecified amount by the parents of a man who died after being stunned by a Taser at Universal Orlando. Adam Johnson, 33, was shocked several times on April 22, 2011 at Universal CityWalk by Officer Edward J. Michael, an off-duty Orlando policeman working as a Universal security guard. Johnson, of Winter Haven, was reportedly acting strangely and when officers interacted with him, he became violent and began fighting. Officer Michael used his Taser at that time.

The lawsuit tells a different story of the encounter, claiming that Johnson "had not touched or threatened the officers" and "they had no legal justification to detain him and acted without provocation." It also claims that Officer Michael used his Taser on Johnson a couple more times, even after he was already "passive and defenseless."

Officer Michael is accused of "violating Johnson's constitutional rights and committing a battery against him." The city is accused of "negligence for failing to adequately train and supervise Michael on Taser use and failing to monitor Johnson after he was shocked to determine if he needed first aid or medical care." The officers claim they started CPR after they discovered he was unresponsive.
