Several guests had to be evacuated from the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit
roller coaster at Universal Orlando
. Just after 7:00pm on October 9, the Orlando Fire Department was notified that 8-12 people were stuck onboard the ride. Universal spokesman Tom Schroder verified that 10 people were stuck vertically on the ride, they were attempting to make the guests comfortable and that it may be two to three hours before the guests could be evacuated. Firefighters began that process shortly after 9:00pm, by using harnesses, ropes and cables to free the stranded passengers one at a time. 12 passengers (one was a child) were removed from the ride. One guest was taken to a hospital due to neck pain.
Schroder said the ride shut down automatically, but technicians are still working to determine the cause of the problem. The ride may reopen tomorrow, October 10. Rip Ride Rockit reaches speeds of 65 miles per hour and is 17 stories tall.
