Are Disney’s Temporary Ride Closures Getting Out of Hand?

I’m a Disney optimist; anyone who knows me knows that. You’re far more likely to find me singing along to park music with a Mickey pretzel in hand than grumbling about anything. But even I, a card-carrying member of the Pixie Dust Positivity Club, have my limits. And friends, we’ve officially reached the part of the program where I must lovingly remove the rose-colored ears and speak from the heart. Because if there’s one thing that’s starting to crack the magic for me, it’s the increasing frequency of ride breakdowns. And yes, it’s absolutely time for a Disney Debate.

You know the feeling: you’ve made it to the park, fueled by caffeine and hope, rocking your perfectly planned DisneyBound, only to open the app and see your favorite ride is…down. Again. Maybe it’s Rise. Maybe it’s Slinky. Maybe it’s the one thing your kids have been hyping since the plane landed. Worse still? It all ends in the same disappointment. Just in case that wasn’t enough, seeing the news in advance on the app is actually the best case scenario! What’s worse is when you’ve already waited 45 sweaty minutes in line and you’re this close to boarding before the dreaded “technical difficulties” announcement rolls in like a thundercloud. Cue internal screaming as you are turned away without any pay-off for your time.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I understand these rides are complex characters. Animatronics, trackless systems, projection mapping… It’s practically magic in itself. Things break. But when it’s the same rides over and over, it stops feeling like unfortunate timing and starts feeling like you’re playing some kind of chaotic vacation roulette. Lightning Lanes, virtual queues, rerouting plans every hour like you’re conducting a military op; it’s a lot! I say this with love: I will always adore Disney, but lately, I’m making notes with backup rides, snacks, and shade spots, as if I’m planning for a natural disaster. On one trip last year, across Disneyland Park and California Adventure, there were more rides closed than open. We spent more wasted time in line before being turned away than anything else, and our ritual first and last rides were unexpectedly closed, ending years of tradition. A year later, with no change in sight, it feels like we are crossing the line into something that needs to be addressed.

So, my Disney family, let me know where you stand. Are the frequent closures getting to you, or is this the new way of balancing technology with expectations that we all need to accept?
