What Should Replace the Tomorrowland Speedway at Walt Disney World?

Yes, I know the Tomorrowland Speedway gets criticized for being a waste of space, but it is worth talking about. Disney has a habit of tearing down fan-favorite attractions to make room for new ones. We have seen it with Muppet*Vision 3D and Rivers of America. Meanwhile, the Speedway, which has far fewer fans, remains. It fills the air with the smell of gas and occupies prime real estate in a park that, with the addition of new lands like Piston Peak and Villains Land, could rival even Disneyland in terms of creativity and guest experience.

The northern section of the Speedway could be perfect for expanding Fantasyland. Imagine adding one or two small dark rides in the style of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, but with fresh concepts like The Sword in the Stone, Sleeping Beauty, or even Tangled. These rides would not need to be on the scale of Fantasy Springs in Tokyo Disney. The goal would be simple, high-capacity attractions that small children and toddlers can enjoy. Adding these rides would bring Magic Kingdom closer to Disneyland in terms of family-friendly offerings.

The southern section could take a more futuristic approach. It could host a small Tomorrowland-themed ride based on Wall-E or Big Hero Six. Even better, it could become the Tomorrowland Imagineering Labs, a hands-on interactive space where guests of all ages can experience the creative process behind Disney attractions. Imagine daily sessions led by real Imagineers, where kids and families can build small inventions, experiment with simple physics challenges, explore robotics, or participate in collaborative design projects. Guests could watch mini demonstrations of new ride technologies, take part in storytelling workshops, or even see concept art and prototypes up close. The Labs could also include rotating challenges that tie into current Disney movies and attractions, making every visit unique. It would be an educational, inspiring, and playful space that sparks curiosity, creativity, and a love of innovation in everyone.

Even fans of the Speedway, which are few and far between, would have a hard time arguing that this would not be an improvement. The experience would be more engaging, the space would be better used, and the overall park would feel fresher, more exciting, and more aligned with what guests expect from Disney today.

The Speedway is outdated and underused. Reimagining this space gives Disney the chance to transform a park that is already beloved into one that could rival even Disneyland in excitement, innovation, and experiences for guests of all ages. Tomorrowland deserves more than what the Speedway is giving it.
