A Disney Splurge Regretted and One I Can’t Live Without

After nearly 40 years of visiting Disney Parks, starting back when I was just a little nugget myself, I can safely say there are not many park experiences I have not tried. I feel incredibly lucky to have spent so much time in the Happiest Place on Earth, and yes, the Most Magical Place on Earth, too, for fairness reasons, of course. Every trip has been filled with memories made alongside family and friends, and those moments are something I truly cherish. But as with anything in life, Disney is not perfect. Along the way, there have been a few splurges I learned from the hard way, and others that I now consider completely non-negotiable.

Let’s get the tricky one out of the way first. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. I know, I know. Many of you adore this experience, and I completely understand the appeal. On one of our early trips with the kids, a member of our traveling family booked a session for their daughter, and while the appointment itself was sweet enough, the ripple effect it had on the rest of the day was something no one expected. The hairstyle was tight and uncomfortable, the dress was hot and impractical, and within hours, it was catching on strollers, getting stepped on during ride loading, and generally making an already busy park day far more stressful than magical. She looked absolutely adorable for about ten minutes, but after that, it became an expensive lesson in timing and expectations. By late afternoon, they were heading back to wash out the hairspray and change her into comfortable clothes, and the mood shift was immediate and noticeable. Even her parents agreed it was not something they would rush to repeat.

Personally, I have always thought this experience might be far better suited to Disney Springs, where there is no park ticket pressure and far more flexibility to enjoy it without sacrificing a full touring day. Unfortunately, this location is temporarily closed, leaving guests only with the Magic Kingdom option. In terms of Disneyland, maybe it should be moved into Downtown Disney as an external park service? Let me know what you think.

Now, for the splurge I will defend forever. Disney PhotoPass.

This is one add-on I simply cannot live without, and I have been singing its praises since long before it was bundled into Lightning Lane access or vacation packages. If you are not racing against the clock with a single park day, stopping for photos along the way is one of the best investments you can make. Disney photographers have an incredible ability to find the perfect angle, frame iconic backdrops, and capture moments you would never manage while juggling phones and bags. Making sure everyone is actually in the photo, together and in different combinations, is something you never regret later. Those images become visual memory triggers, the kind that instantly transport you back to how that moment felt, not just how it looked.

PhotoPass photos are perfect for post-trip photo books, framed prints at home, and those spontaneous attraction shots that catch pure joy, surprise, and laughter in real time. Watching the photos roll straight into the app still feels a little magical, and we love scrolling through them together while waiting in line. Seeing those on-ride photos, especially now that my kids are both enormous and somehow tower over me, never gets old.

After decades of Disney trips, I have learned this much. Some splurges are best admired from afar, and others quietly become part of the fabric of your family memories. The trick is knowing which ones are worth holding onto long after the trip is over.
