Secrets of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway from Walt Disney Imagineering

Walt Disney Imagineering has released a new behind-the-scenes video that pulls back the curtain on the technology, artistry, and problem-solving behind Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Titled “Inside Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway: Behind-the-Scenes Secrets from Imagineers Who Built It,” the video is part of the WED Walks series and features the Imagineers who designed and built the attraction guiding us viewers through, as they walk the ride space itself.

The walkthrough reveals just how much experimentation went into creating Disney’s first Mickey Mouse-themed ride. Imagineers share that Runaway Railway contains more Hidden Mickeys than any other attraction ever built at Walt Disney World. They appear throughout the attraction in set pieces, lighting fixtures, and graphic details. One of the more clever examples appears inside the Chinese Theatre, where a Hidden Mickey in the chandelier is spelled out using Mandarin characters.

The video also dives into how the attraction’s preshow was developed. One of the two preshow rooms was built as a full prototype and tested on site before the second room was constructed, allowing Imagineers to fine-tune timing, sightlines, and effects before committing to the final design.

From a technical standpoint, Imagineers explain that Runaway Railway pushed Disney into new territory. For the first time, projection mapping was combined with UV-printed elements and UV-reactive paint. To make this work consistently across the attraction, the team developed a specific gray base tone referred to internally as “happy color,” which allows projected images to appear vibrant while maintaining the hand-drawn, animated style of the ride.

A fun Easter egg discovery is “Crustacia,” a small crab character hidden in every scene of the attraction. She started as a little pet as they were animating the tropical scene, but ended up sticking around. Keep an eye out next time you ride!

The video also addresses one of the attraction’s most complex moments: the finale, where the factory transforms into a park around the ride vehicles. Printing and projecting onto moving set pieces while keeping everything visually aligned was a significant challenge. Add in the need to reduce glare on projection surfaces while preserving the sketch-like aesthetic, and it’s easy to see why Runaway Railway required entirely new paint formulas and finishes.
