If you’ve ever needed a quiet reset at EPCOT, The Seas with Nemo and Friends has probably done the trick. Beyond the clamshell ride, or through the exit gift shop, and up the escalator to the second level of the aquarium, there’s a corner many visitors breeze right past.

Tucked near the escalator that leads back down is the nursery area, home to smaller tanks filled with coral, juvenile fish, and one very cute surprise.

Remember, this is the second-largest aquarium in the United States, so it’s easy to focus on the headline acts downstairs: rays gliding overhead, sharks cruising by, sea turtles doing their thing (including the ever-popular Turtle Talk with Crush).

But up here, beyond the deeper aquarium tanks, the nursery’s tanks are more intimate. And before you know it, you’re face-to-face with sea urchins wearing Mickey ear hats. You heard that right.
Several of the sea urchins in the nursery tanks have been “Disney-fied” with tiny Mickey ear hats perched on top. Sometimes they’re straight, sometimes they’re a little crooked, or hanging on by an ear. Sea urchins have a natural behavior called covering, where they pick up objects like shells, rocks, or bits of coral and place them on their bodies. In the wild, this helps protect them from sunlight and predators. At EPCOT, it also means the urchins decide exactly how those Mickey ears are worn.

On its own, this detail is one of the most delightful, easy-to-miss moments anywhere in the park. But during the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts, it gets even better.
Did You Sea This Urchin?
For the festival, some of the sea urchins receive limited-time artistic accessories. Tiny French berets. Mini paint palettes. Suddenly, these already adorable creatures look like they’re ready to debut their own gallery show. You should have heard the gasp I let out upon discovering this playful addition.

This kind of detail is exactly why The Seas remains one of EPCOT’s best escape areas. It’s calm with a nice helping of good ol’ Disney edutainment, and it has layers whether you’re watching the manatees, rays, sharks… or discovering that sea urchins can accessorize themselves better than most of us.

Personally, this space always pulls me right back to my Seabase Alpha-loving childhood. One clamshell ride later and suddenly EPCOT feels a little more personal. And if you spot an urchin in a tiny hat along the way, congratulations. You found one of the park’s sweetest little secrets.
