One of the most beloved attractions in Magic Kingdom is about to welcome guests back, and it’s bringing a little something new along for the ride.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is set to reopen on May 3, 2026, following a major refurbishment that reaches from the top of the mountain down into its deepest caverns. For many Disney fans, this attraction isn’t just another thrill ride. It’s a core memory.

At its heart, the story of Big Thunder Mountain remains the same. The tale of Barnabas T. Bullion and his ill-fated mining operation still sets the stage, with the mountain itself pushing back against those who try to take its gold. But when guests climb aboard those runaway trains again, they may notice the wilderness feels just a little more alive.
One of the biggest updates is the newly enhanced cavern scenes. As the trains wind through the mountain, riders will pass through glowing underground spaces filled with shimmering mineral pools and softly illuminated rock formations. It’s a striking visual moment, but like everything on Big Thunder, there’s a hint of danger lurking beneath the beauty.

Behind the scenes, this update goes far beyond what guests will immediately see. Disney has installed an entirely new track system along with refreshed ride vehicles, all designed to keep the attraction running smoothly while preserving the chaotic, high-energy feel that fans expect. The goal here wasn’t to reinvent Big Thunder. It was to make it feel like itself again, just sharper and more polished.
There’s also a small but meaningful change for families. When the attraction reopens, the height requirement will be lowered to 38 inches, making it accessible to even more young adventurers ready to take on what’s still known as the wildest ride in the wilderness.
For longtime fans, this reopening feels like the return of an old friend. The twists, the turns, the sudden drops – they’re all still there. But now, there’s just enough new detail woven in to make that next ride feel a little different.
And for a ride that’s been part of so many Disney trips over the years, that’s exactly the kind of magic people hope for.
