Hey Disney friends! There is something so special about Walt Disney World after the sun goes down. As the lights begin to twinkle and the parks take on a completely different atmosphere, the magic somehow feels even more enchanting. After a long summer day, the cooler evening air is a welcome relief from the Florida heat and humidity, and those final few hours often become my favorite time to explore. Better yet, there are a handful of attractions that are simply better after dark, offering a completely different experience than they do in the middle of the day. If you’re planning a summer visit, here are five rides that I always try to save for nighttime.
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Magic Kingdom
There is something undeniably magical about racing through the forest with the illuminated cottages of Fantasyland glowing around you. The outdoor sections of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train feel completely different at night, with the lights of the surrounding land adding to the fairytale atmosphere. By the time you glide back into the sparkling diamond mine, it feels as though you’ve stepped into the story itself.
Slinky Dog Dash, Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Toy Story Land really comes alive after dark. The colorful lights strung throughout Andy’s backyard make the entire area feel like one giant toy box, and zipping around on Slinky Dog Dash beneath all those glowing decorations is such a fun experience. It’s already one of the happiest coasters in Walt Disney World, but at night it somehow feels even more playful.
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Disney’s Hollywood Studios
If there was ever a ride designed for the evening, this is it. The Hollywood Hills Hotel looks even more mysterious once darkness falls on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, with the eerie lighting making every step through the queue feel wonderfully unsettling. Then comes that unforgettable moment at the top of the tower, when the doors open and you catch a breathtaking view of the glowing lights across Walt Disney World before plunging back into the darkness below.
Expedition Everest, Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Animal Kingdom becomes one of Disney’s most beautiful parks after sunset, and Expedition Everest is one of the biggest reasons why. The mountain is dramatically illuminated against the night sky, giving the attraction an entirely different personality. Racing backward through the darkness with only glimpses of the mountain around you somehow makes every twist, turn, and encounter with the legendary Yeti feel even more intense.
TRON Lightcycle / Run, Magic Kingdom
If one attraction was made to be experienced after dark, it’s TRON Lightcycle / Run. The glowing canopy creates one of the most spectacular sights anywhere in Walt Disney World, and launching beneath those pulsing lights before racing into the digital world feels exactly like stepping into the movie. Even if you’re not riding, it’s worth wandering through Tomorrowland after sunset just to admire how incredible this attraction looks lit up against the night sky.
Special shoutout to the Mad Tea Party in Magic Kingdom that has such a magnificent presence at night! Of course, every Disney fan has their own favorite nighttime tradition, but these five attractions always top my list once the sun goes down. If you’re visiting this summer, try saving a few of your must-do rides until the evening, or at least repeating them after dark for a totally different experience.
