Pixar is officially getting into the ghost business!
During D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Pixar revealed Ghost Market, the studio’s first-ever ghost movie, which is headed to theaters in Spring 2028. The original film is being directed by Trevor Jimenez, whose previous Pixar work includes the Oscar-nominated short Weekends.
We don’t have many details about the story yet, but Pixar gave fans a pretty funny introduction to what to expect. In a video shared by the studio, Ghost Market is described rather simply as “a movie about hungry ghosts.”
Apparently, “a lot of crazy stuff happens,” too.
And for anyone hearing “Pixar ghost movie” and immediately wondering whether we’re heading into genuinely scary territory, it doesn’t sound like that’s the plan. The video jokes that this won’t be one of those scary movies that leaves you worried about having nightmares for the rest of your life.
Naturally, that reassurance doesn’t last long.
Moments later, the kid delivering the message realizes something has returned, yells, “Oh no! It’s back!“, drops his phone and runs off screaming. So maybe we’ll reserve judgment on exactly how spooky this thing is going to be.
Pixar hasn’t revealed much more about what we’ll encounter in Ghost Market, but the supernatural premise alone has me curious. Pixar has certainly explored the afterlife before with films like Coco and Soul, but an entire original movie built around ghosts gives the studio a very different playground.
And I have to admit, “Pixar’s first ghost movie” was not on my D23 bingo card.
Ghost Market is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters in Spring 2028.
