When it comes to Disney theme parks, few things spark as much excitement as the attractions that define each resort. While both Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California are known for their unique charm, but they also share several rides with some subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) differences. Today, let’s pit similar attractions against each other. These are attractions using the same ride systems found at Disney California Adventure and the four WDW parks. Buckle up and please pull on the yellow strap — it’s time to dive into a Disney ride face-off!
Test Track VS. Radiator Springs Racers
Slow down, you ain’t racin’ yet. Test Track walked so Radiator Springs Racers could run. No, literally. We wouldn’t have the premiere Cars Land attraction without the innovative EPCOT ride, which runs on three powerful computers per car. Of course, we can thank Test Track for paving the way, and I’ll always have a soft spot for the 1.0 version filled with crash test dummies and car accidents, but this is an easy win for Radiator Springs Racers. We’ve got massive Cars animatronics, some of the best music, stunning views of Carburetor Canyon… and cow tippin’?!
WINNER: Radiator Springs Racers
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster VS. IncrediCoaster
When it comes to the “big coasters” for Disney fans, these two always get pitted together… and for good reason. They both offer a more extreme thrill — the first stateside Disney coasters featuring, *gasp*, inversions! Compared to the classic Disney mountains like Big Thunder and Space, they both have their charms and quirks when it comes to theming, and they both offer an onboard audio experience. But where Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster falls short is its overall length- offering a very fast and intense experience… but I’m always left wanting just a bit more LA Traffic to speed through. IncrediCoaster is just the right length and fun factor with a beautiful boardwalk aesthetic that gives it a major leg up. Plus, we get to enjoy that sweet scent of num-num cookies on that one lift?! For me, the choice is easy.
WINNER: IncrediCoaster
Grizzly River Run VS. Kali River Rapids
Both of these are whitewater raft rides where you traverse freely down a faux river, offering a different ride experience with each journey. This means you never know exactly how soaked you’ll get… but I’d count on it on both coasts. Kali River Rapids at Disney’s Animal Kingdom was built first. Unfortunately, due to budgetary limits from DAK’s initial opening, this ride suffered major cutbacks. There’s some lush jungle theming, but outside the ornate queue, there’s not much theming to the actual ride course. There’s an overall message conservation message tied to illegal logging, which supports the park’s mission, but there’s a lot to be desired when it comes to attraction story and details.
Naturally, Grizzly River Run received major improvements since it opened a few years later with Disney California Adventure. The ride path is much longer, and more adventurous feeling as you glide through caverns, ultimately dropping down into a geyser field. Ever ride this at night? Life-changing.
Sadly, Kali River Rapids never reached its full potential. I’m wondering if Disney will ever change this ride up to include more animals or intellectual property one day. Couldn’t we have had an Indiana Jones raft ride? I kid… but, #SaveDINOSAUR
WINNER: Grizzly River Run
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout VS. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Alright, this one’s a toughie. While these are the same elevator drop ride systems, they also offer completely different ride experiences. I do give an upper hand to Tower of Terror for having that unique 5th dimension scene, where our elevator unhooks and travels across “dimensions” to the other side of the building.
On the other hand, I have way too much fun dancing and singing along to Guardians. The “drops” here are more like swinging gantry lift movements in between longer lifts and drops. It does feel like Tower offers a more creepy and thrilling drop experience… I also must consider the theming. While the Tivan collection is well done, possessing many Easter eggs and details within the queue and pre-show areas, Tower of Terror has always been a marvel to take in. I’ll never get tired of that feeling as you walk into the hotel lobby. And while The Twilight Zone is technically also an intellectual property, somehow Tower of Terror feels like a more original attraction versus the Guardians overlay. Outside of The Great Movie Ride, Tower of Terror is a strong piece of Disney’s Hollywood Studios history, I honestly can’t imagine the park without it. It is the park’s icon, after all!
But that Rocket Raccoon animatronic… ugh, this one’s so tough. But when all is said and done, we do still have Cosmic Rewind over at EPCOT. If only we had an animatronic or two in that pre-show…
WINNER: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
