Maggie Smith, the legendary actress of stage and screen, passed away at age 89 in London.
Her sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, shared in a statement:
“She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.”
During her lengthy stage and screen career, Maggie Smith was named Dame Commander (the equivalent of knighthood) of the British Empire in 1990, one of few of her generation. She was credited two Oscars, three Emmys and countless stage awards during her lifetime.
Both a master in classic and contemporary roles, Maggie Smith leaves behind a legacy. Many know her from her iconic screen roles, including the sharp-tongued Dowager Countess in Downton Abbey, the inspirational Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter film franchise, and the compassionate Wendy in Hook.
Rest in peace to this absolute legend.
