The Anaheim City Council has voted to approve Disney’s expansive $1.9 billion development proposal, also known as Disneyland Forward. After an 8-hour meeting, city council members unanimously voted in favor of the proposal in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
While the city council endorsed the proposal on Wednesday morning, it will undergo another vote on May 7. If approved on that day, changes associated with Disneyland Forward won’t take effect until 30 days later.
Many people, including Anaheim residents, Disneyland cast members, and officials from neighboring cities, voiced either support or opposition to the Disneyland Forward proposal.
Disneyland Forward outlines Disney’s vision for expanding its theme park resort in Anaheim. This 40-year proposal provides a framework for the location and nature of future developments. It paves the way for building new attractions, shops, and restaurants within existing undeveloped areas of the resort owned or operated by Disney.
The proposal includes plans for constructing theme park attractions adjacent to hotels on the west side of Disneyland Drive. Additionally, it envisions the development of attractions, shopping, dining, and entertainment in the current location of the Toy Story Parking Area at Katella Avenue and Harbor Boulevard.
According to a report on KTLA, the company would also pay $40 million to buy Magic Way, Hotel Way, and part of Clementine Street from the city, a move some residents oppose. Magic Way provides access for drivers using the Pixar Pals Parking Structure and guests visiting the Disneyland Hotel.
A city spokesperson told KTLA that if Disney bought Magic Way, it would be transformed into a pedestrian walkway.
