The City of Orlando has announced that they have purchased Pulse nightclub and plan to turn it into a memorial.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer says the city paid $2.25 million for the nightclub, which was the site of the country’s deadliest mass shooting back in July. 49 people were killed and another 68 injured when a gunman opened fire inside the club.
Dyer says the memorial won’t be set up right away, as mourners are still gathering at the club and visiting it to say their goodbyes to the victims. He said the city will probably wait 12-18 months before taking any action.
As for what the permanent memorial may look like, the city intends to ask the community for their opinions, and may even leave part of the club intact. Dyer says the ultimate goal is “to create something to honor the memory of the victims that are deceased [and] those that were injured, and a testament to the resilience of our community.”
