New FastPass technology being tested at Disneyland

The Disneyland Resort is testing a new process for FastPasses at Space Mountain that several online sources think could be a precursor to MagicBands and FastPass+, the attraction reservation system that is now in place at Walt Disney World.

Guests were asked to scan the barcode of their FastPass at the entrance to the attraction to test a new barcode-based FastPass reader.  As guests scanned their paper FastPasses, the red light on the reader turned green to indicate that the FastPass was valid, which is similar to what happens when MagicBands are scanned.

However, the use of barcodes makes this test significantly different from the the RFID technology that is currently used at Walt Disney World, which could bring into question the future of MagicBands at the Disneyland Resort.

Other than confirming the nature of the test, Disneyland officials did not have any additional comment.
