If there is one thing I have learned over the years, it’s that most Disney guests can easily be split into two distinct camps: do-it-all rope dropers & its-a-vacation sleep in-ers. I was born and raised in the former camp, conditioned to believe that one must be up in the dark if necessary to be one of the first humans to make it into the parks. Now, as my teenagers struggle to wake from their slumber, pleading if we really need to be there so early. I’m in two minds about the answer, which brings me to our Disney Debate for this weekend: is rope dropping actually worth it?
I’ve never done it any other way, though friends of mine swear that some days, you are better off sleeping in and rolling in as the crowds break for lunch and go hard while the early risers slowly pike out. For the early birds (either naturally early risers or simply control freaks like me), rope drop has become almost a religious experience. We have tried and tested ways, we know exactly where we are headed, and we will relish that first line we make it to with almost no wait time. However, is it enough to warrant all the fuss getting to a park in the wee, rope-drop hours of the morning?
But for the sleep-in squad? Friends, you may have us beat on this one. At times! Some argue that Disney magic isn’t meant to come with a 5:30 am alarm clock and excessive early-afternoon yawning. So, who’s right? Is the rope-drop hustle worth the hassle, or are we adding too much stress and structure to our vacation? I love a good plan, and there is a strong chance that my controlling nature will never allow me to ‘sleep in’ on Disney property. However, I can admit that it doesn’t make my way the best way, especially if it keeps a few extra guests in bed to leave me to Space Mountain.
Just because I can admit my way isn’t the best one doesn’t mean I can stand the thought of the parks being open and me not being in them. Sorry, my children, I’m still setting the alarm, but I’m happy to hear arguments in either direction just the same!
