How I’d Plan a Disney World Trip If I Had to Start Over Today

If I wiped the slate clean and planned a Disney World trip from scratch right now, I’d do it very differently than I did even a few years ago. The theme parks didn’t just change. The way you have to think about a trip has changed, too. You can’t wing it the same way anymore and expect it to work out.

One of the first things I’d drop is the idea that I need to do everything.

That mindset will wreck your trip faster than anything. You’ll spend the whole time chasing rides, refreshing your phone, and stressing about what you missed instead of enjoying where you are. I used to build packed park days with a plan down to the hour, printed spreadsheets, and everything. Now? I’d pick a few must-dos per day and call anything else we fit in a win. If something else happens, great. If not, I’m not going to have a meltdown over it.

I’d also skip bouncing between parks every single day.

Park hopping sounds efficient. It isn’t always. It is such a time-eater. It adds stress. And honestly, each park has enough going on that you don’t need to treat it like a checklist. I’d build slower days instead. One park. Maybe a break in the afternoon. Maybe dinner somewhere outside the park. Give yourself room to breathe. It’s so important to keep your sanity.

Another thing I’d rethink is where I stay.

I used to treat the hotel like a place to sleep. Now I’d put more weight on it. Not necessarily the most expensive option, but something that makes your trip easier. Transportation matters. Skyliner access matters. Being able to get back to your room without it turning into a whole journey matters more than I gave it credit for.

Now, what would I prioritize?

Mornings. Early ones.

Getting into the parks early is still one of the biggest advantages you can give yourself. Lower crowds. Shorter waits. Better energy. You knock out more in those first few hours than you will the rest of the day. I’d plan to be there before opening, get a handful of rides done, and then ease off instead of pushing straight through until exhaustion hits, because it will.

I’d also prioritize experiences over stacking Lightning Lanes all day.

Yes, the system can help. No, it’s not the whole trip. I see people glued to their phones trying to optimize every minute. That’s not how I want to spend a vacation. I’d book a couple of key rides if it makes sense, then put the phone away and actually look around. A lot is happening in these parks that you miss when you’re staring at a screen.

Dining would get a bit of a reset, too.

I used to chase dining reservations like they were hard tickets, refreshing my computer and phone constantly to find that perfect reservation time. Now I’d keep it far simpler. One or two table-service meals I really care about, and the rest are flexible. Some of my favorite meals have been quick-service spots or places we walked into with no plan at all. A last-minute breakfast at a French bakery in Paris? Yes, please! Locking yourself into too many reservations can add so many limitations to your day.

And here’s the biggest shift. What’s changed isn’t just pricing or planning tools. It’s how much better your trip gets when you stop trying to control every single second of it.

You can still plan. You should plan. But there’s a line where planning turns into pressure, and Disney World is not fun for anyone in your travel party when you’re operating like a project manager on a deadline.

If I ditched all my Disney trip planning experiences and started over today, I’d build a trip that actually leaves room for the stuff you don’t plan. The random moments. The rides you didn’t expect to love. The break you didn’t know you needed.

That’s the version of a Disney trip I’d want now.
