1) They don’t go
The first mistake families make is not going to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park at all. Animal Kingdom offers some great experiences, including one of the most popular roller coasters at Disney World, Expedition Everest, and two of the best shows on property (Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo are awesome!). I have heard many stories of people who didn’t think they would like the park, but went anyway and ended up having some of the best experiences of their entire trip while there.
2) They go in the middle of the day, or at the hottest point of the day
Because of all the foliage and jungle-like theming, Animal Kingdom can feel like one of the hottest parks at Disney World. It’s best to try and take advantage of rope drop. Being there early means you will have shorter waits and cooler temperatures.
3) They don’t take time to visit trails
So many families rush through the park and miss the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful theming of Animal Kingdom. Some of the best places to enjoy and experience Animal Kingdom’s atmosphere are the trails for viewing animals. These trails are beautifully themed, especially the Maharajah Jungle Trek, and offer a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the park. They are very educational and give you close up views of some amazing animals, including gorillas and tigers.
4) They don’t go see Flights of Wonder
I cannot tell you how many times I have had someone tell me that they happened upon the Flights of Wonder show and although weren’t planning to attend, ended up loving it once they did. This educational and beautiful show featuring many types of birds is surprisingly good and truly worth a watch if you can fit it in.
5) They don’t research rides or attractions.
Some attractions at Animal Kingdom Park can be too intense for little ones. I have witnessed many familes having to leave an attraction early because it was too scary for them. To avoid this, you can read about and even watch Youtube videos of attractions beforehand to make sure all people in your party will enjoy it. Dinosaur, Expedition Everest, and even, It’s Tough to be a Bug are good attractions to research as they are some of the more dark, intense ones at Animal Kingdom Park.
6) They don’t prepare for hot or rainy weather or getting wet
Many families end up having to skip a park or leave early because they aren’t prepared for the weather. I have already mentioned trying to avoid Animal Kingdom Park at hot points of the day, but if you can’t, try to be prepared. Bring and drink tons of cold water or ask for a free cup from quick service regularly. It can also rain unexpectedly in Orlando, so try to spend rainy days at another park with more indoor attractions, like Epcot or Hollywood Studios. If you can’t, make sure you pack ponchos. The ponchos also come in handy for riding Kali River Rapids to help keep you dry. And lastly, consider packing a second set of clothing if you will be at the park all day. This is great for little ones who want to splash in The Boneyard play area, but also great for adults. A fresh shirt can make a world of difference after a sweaty or rainy few hours at the park.
