We learned Monday that Walt Disney World is testing Resort Airline Check-In Service at Disney’s Pop Century Resort, which has many guests wondering if Disney’s Magical Express or a similar service might be coming back. We fondly remember when that luggage service allowed resort guests to check their bags and receive their boarding passes right at their Disney resort before heading to Orlando International Airport (MCO). The convenience of dropping off luggage at the resort and having it seamlessly transferred to the airport was a significant perk of staying in the “Disney Bubble” that guests loved, and, although limited, this new test suggests Disney may be considering bringing back a version of that beloved service.
Resort Airline Check-In went hand-in-hand with Disney’s Magical Express transportation service that once made traveling to and from Walt Disney World effortless. Disney’s Magical Express was a complimentary transportation service that took guests between Orlando International Airport (MCO) and their Disney resort, while also offering seamless luggage delivery. For years, this service provided convenience and value, especially for families and first-time visitors. Its discontinuation in January 2022 left many guests with no choice but to pay for alternative transportation options, such as Mears Connect, which currently offers airport transportation services at an additional cost.
We can’t help but wonder if this test at Pop Century could be a sign that it’s on its way back. As of the time of this post, Southwest Airlines is the only airline participating.
The return of Resort Airline Check-In would be a game-changer for many travelers. Being able to drop off luggage at the resort and not worry about it until arrival at their home airport allowed guests to enjoy their last day at Walt Disney World stress-free. Whether spending a few more hours in the parks, relaxing by the pool before departure, or visiting Disney Springs, the service gave families more time to soak in the magic without worrying about their bags.
While Disney has not announced any plans to bring back Magical Express or Resort Airline Check-In officially, the current test at Pop Century suggests they are exploring ways to improve at least the departure experience for guests. It’s possible that Disney is considering reintroducing this service as part of a larger effort to enhance the overall guest experience, perhaps with updated features or new partnerships with airlines.
Of course, we can’t help but note the timing of this announcement, especially with the grand opening of Universal Epic Universe coming up in less than two months. We wondered if Disney would respond to Universal in a more significant way than what they announced at the 2024 D23 event, and the return of these two services could be just the ticket.
For now, this luggage service test at Disney’s Pop Century Resort has generated excitement among Disney fans who are eager for the return of seamless transportation and luggage handling. If the test proves successful, it could signal a much-needed revival of a service that added convenience and value to a Walt Disney World vacation. Until then, guests will be watching closely, hoping that the magic of stress-free travel returns to Disney resorts.
