President Donald Trump’s FCC commissioner announced Friday that he is investigating The Walt Disney Company and ABC to determine whether they are “promoting invidious forms of DEI discrimination.”
FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr announced the investigation in a letter sent to Disney CEO Robert Iger on Friday. Disney responded that it is reviewing the letter and looks forward to addressing the commission’s questions.
“For decades, Disney focused on churning out box office and programming successes,” Carr wrote to Iger. “But then something changed. Disney has now become embroiled in rounds of controversy surrounding its DEI policies.”
He noted that despite reports of Disney scaling back some of its DEI practices, “significant concerns still remain.”
According to Axios, Disney also revised the content warnings shown before films like Dumbo and Peter Pan. Previously stating that the movies included “negative depictions and/or mistreatment of peoples or culture,” the updated message now reads: “This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions.”
Carr’s letter referenced an article by conservative activist Christopher Rufo, who described Disney as “the wokest place on Earth.”
Trump has targeted all forms of DEI — standing for diversity, equity, and inclusion — efforts across public and private organizations.
