REVIEW: Trying the World’s Best Cake at EPCOT

REVIEW: Trying the World's Best Cake at EPCOT Verden's Beste Kake 1

In the vein of “it’s good to have goals,” I think I’m going to take it upon myself to try every snack offered at Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe in EPCOT‘s Norway pavilion. If you missed my account of trying School Bread for the first time, be sure to click here, and if you want to catch up on my recent review of Kringla’s newest snack, Kransekake, click here to read my thoughts.

On one of my recent visits, I asked the cast member behind the counter what he would recommend that I try. He immediately pointed in the direction of the bakery’s Verden’s Beste Kake and said that the slice of meringue-topped cake was the one for me. Side note: I have gotten into the habit of asking cast members what they recommend. They always know what’s what.

After a quick peek at the internet, it turns out that if you and I were to order Verden’s Beste Kake in the actual country of Norway, we’d ask for Kvæfjordkake. Over time, the name of the cake has been simplified to Verden’s Beste Kake, the translation of which is “World’s Best Cake.” Well, we’ll be the judge of that.

Verden’s Beste Kake, known as the national cake of Norway, features two layers of sponge cake topped with a generous amount of meringue. Sandwiched between the two layers of sponge cake is a thick vanilla custard. The cake is topped with sliced almonds.

Like the Kransekake, this is a dessert that would pair perfectly with a cup of hot tea. EPCOT’s version of the treat is light and airy, thanks to the sponge cake and the meringue. The thick layer of vanilla custard is quite good and is perfectly creamy. The sugary meringue is lightly toasted on top.

This is a good option for those for whom chocolate holds no great affection. Layers of delightful vanilla and almond flavor are always a good thing, and I feel that it’s a good treat to try if you’re tired of some of the old standards.

The knock that I’ll give it is that, for $4.29, I’d like a bit of a bigger slice. I know that it’s not the smallest treat, but if we’re paying close to $5 for a snack, I’d like for it to be a bit more substantial.

Have you tried Kringla’s Verden’s Beste Kake? If so, please let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.

Troll Horn: I’m coming for you next. I hear you’re quite the yummy treat.
