There’s a growing trend that’s become hard to ignore at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, the grumpy, self-deprecating husband shirts. You’ve seen them. They say things like “Most Expensive Day Ever,” “I Don’t Do Matching Shirts,” or “She’s My Disney Villain.” Usually, they’re worn by dads or husbands who look like they’d rather be anywhere else. Maybe the first time someone spotted one of these shirts, it got a little laugh. I’ll admit, the original “Most Expensive Day Ever” shirt might have earned a small chuckle when it first appeared. But now? The joke’s over. It’s been played out thousands of times, and at this point, it doesn’t come across as clever or funny; it just makes the person wearing it look genuinely grumpy and miserable.

When I brought this up to someone recently, they told me, “Well, it was probably the wife who bought it.” I don’t buy that excuse. If my wife ever handed me a shirt like that and said, “Here, wear this,” I’d politely and lovely decline. I’d explain that I don’t want to walk around in something that sends the message that I’m annoyed, bored, or too cool to have fun with my family. Even if someone else did buy the shirt, that says something too, it means that’s how they perceive you. Either way, it’s not a great look.
What’s worse is that these shirts almost act like a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you spend the day joking about how expensive the park is or how you were “dragged” there, guess what? You’re setting yourself up for exactly that kind of day. You’ll start to notice every dollar spent, every long line, every small inconvenience. Before you know it, you’ve created the very experience you were sarcastically advertising, an expensive, frustrating, joyless day. And while you’re sulking about the crowds, your family is trying to make memories that you’re too busy complaining about to enjoy.
It doesn’t have to be that way. You’re at one of the most beloved places on the planet, “The Happiest Place on Earth” or “The Most Magical Place on Earth,” depending on which coast you’re on. These are destinations where people save for years just to experience a few days of wonder and escape from the everyday. And yes, they can be costly and crowded, but they are so much more, so why show up wearing something that immediately says, “I don’t want to be here”?

Instead, choose to be the dad who’s smiling, laughing, and having fun, sometimes even if things are going wrong. Be the person who joins in, who leans into the magic instead of rolling their eyes at it. You don’t need a shirt that makes fun of your vacation; wear something that shows you’re part of the fun. Because here’s the truth: nobody is looking at those sarcastic shirts and thinking, “What a funny guy.” They’re thinking, “That person seems miserable.”
So, if you’ve got one of those shirts sitting in your drawer, maybe it was a gag gift, a cheap souvenir, or was funny 5-10 years ago, leave it there. Choose something else that day. You don’t need to announce that your wife planned the trip or that you think Disney is overpriced. Everyone already knows it’s expensive, and no one’s forcing you to be there. You’re lucky enough to be on vacation at a place built around joy and imagination. Don’t waste it trying to look cool or cynical. Just have fun.
The dads and husbands who are laughing, dancing with their kids, and taking goofy photos in front of Cinderella Castle, they’re the ones everyone wants to be around. Be one of those people. Even if you once thought the joke shirt was harmless, take this as a reminder that what you wear says something about you.
