The Night They Canceled Candlelight Regina Hinrichs It's not often I can prove my esteemed colleague Kevin Klose wrong, but when he stated that they never cancel Candlelight because of bad weather, I told him the tale of Christmas Eve of '02:Our group of 6 holiday adventurers had the Christmas Eve Candlelight Processional dinner package booked for the 8:15 performance. We had dinner at the Rose & Crown and now head to the CP package holder line. Picture this, it’s pouring. I’m not talking sprinkles, I’m talking downpour. Still, my crew and a bunch of other fools stay in line because the Cast Member said the show would take place. Did you ever see the kind of puddles that form in Epcot in the pouring rain? You could sail a Friendship boat across them. I’m wondering if my sneakers will dry out by New Year’s Eve. So…we’re getting drenched and my future son-in-law uttered the infamous words “well, it can’t get any worse.” That’s when the lightning bolt of lightning bolts lit the darkness followed by a crash of thunder that shook our fillings loose. But yet, the Cast Member said “stay in line.” I’m looking at the tree about three feet to my left and think of all the times we’re told “never stand by a tree during a thunderstorm.” Still, we stay there because “the show will go on.” More lightning and I start to hyperventilate. A bunch of us cram ourselves into the Kodak kiosk which is under a very large tree. My husband stays in line to hold our place because the Cast Member said someone had to. (Or was it because he's 6'2"?? The Cast Member was petite and we all know that lightning strikes the highest object. Hmm...) The night’s narrator was Gary Sinise. During this whole mess my son is repeatedly saying in his best Forrest Gump voice, “Ice cream Lieutenant Dan, ice cream.” It was funny the first time, not so funny the 57th time. We’re also listening to future son-in-law talking about the Bangers and Mash he had at the Rose & Crown. We think he just liked saying that’s what he ate. I was getting ready to bang him one.It’s now five minutes before the performance and guess what; they canceled it due to inclement weather. I guess they didn’t want to risk having the CM who wears the tree top get lit up for real.

The Candlelight Processional dining packages allow you to enjoy a meal at one of Epcot's restaurants, while guaranteeing you a seat for the show. It's important to note that at times this is THE only way to get a seat. Those with Dinner Packages are the first to be seated - those waiting in line (a.k.a. the one's who didn't buy the package will be given the very few seats that remain.) If you're in Disney during the holiday's this is a "Don't Miss" event.
