New development at Port Canaveral?

Disney Cruise Line passengers may soon be spending a little more time at Port Canaveral. Port officials are in the planning stages for a $25 million project that would include a visitors center, Florida history museum, waterfront retail shops and restaurants and an observation tower. An area would be set aside for a hotel to be added later.

According to the Orlando Business Journal, the port is the second-busiest in the world for multi-day cruises, seeing 4 million cruise ship passengers each year.

There have been plans for years to add to the existing restaurants and businesses at the port, but nothing has come of it until now. Canaveral Cove, as the new development is being called, wouldn't harm the existing businesses; it would be built in another section of the land. Funds for the project would come from donations, sponsorships and government grants.

The project's developers are hoping that the port can become more of a destination in itself, instead of just a speedbump on passengers' way to the Orlando theme parks.
