Longtime
Disneyland guitarist, Ernie McLean, recently passed away at age 87. McLean had worked for Disneyland for more than 30 years and was reportedly the last cast member to be hired by Walt Disney himself. McLean was known for playing jazz music in
New Orleans Square and was an original member of the Royal Street Bachelors, a jazz trio that began in 1966.
McLean's father, who played the banjo and guitar in a New Orleans' government band, taught him to play the guitar when he was 11. After high school, McLean joined the Navy and played in their band for four and a half years. When his military career was over, he kept up with his music, playing with such big names as Dave Bartholomew, Fats Domino, Nancy Wilson, Little Richard, and Sonny and Cher.
McLean started at Disneyland as part of a temporary tour, but was hired on permanently by Walt Disney when a sub was needed for the Disneyland banjo player.
Stan Freese, Disneyland talent booking director and friend of McLean, said, "He was a blues and rock legend. He was a kind, classy gentleman who never spoke badly about anyone or anything. He loved his job, and we all loved him. His presence will be sorely missed."
