Universal Studios Orlando is closing the JAWS ride and "Amity-themed area" on January 2, 2012. A new attraction will be taking its place, but details regarding this have not yet been released. JAWS opened with the park in 1990 and is centered around the 1975 film of the same name. Park guests ride on a boat that is "attacked" by an animatronic shark.

Universal spokesman Tom Schroder said, "Jaws has been an amazing attraction and an important part of our history. We know that Jaws holds a special place in the hearts of our guests. But we always have to look to the future and dedicate ourselves to providing new, innovative entertainment experiences for our guests." Employees at this attraction will be relocated to other jobs at the theme park.
