Universal Orlando's "Dragon Challenge" roller coaster at
Islands of Adventure has always been known for its two intertwined roller coasters which brings riders on the two tracks as close as 18 inches to each other. After two rider injuries this summer, Universal Orlando has permanently stopped this part of the attraction. The coasters will now be launched separately and marketing for the attraction now advertises a "high-speed chase between two coasters."
Universal is not publicly saying why the change has taken place, but there was an internal investigation this summer into two injuries that took place on the coaster. A 52-year-old male guest from Puerto Rico had to have his right eyeball removed after riding the coaster; he claims he was struck by a falling object from the opposite coaster. Two weeks later, another man spoke with news crews after riding the attraction and said he was struck in the foot, arm and face.
The results of the investigation were not discussed, but Universal has released several statements reiterating their policy of securing loose objects while riding. This may help substantiate the riders' claims of injuries from flying objects. These two claims are the first of their kind to be made public since the ride opened in 1999. According to the
Orlando Sentinel, theme parks are required to report injuries that occur in their parks, but only "those which result in an immediate hospital stay of at least 24 hours for purposes other than medical observation."
Theme park insiders say falling objects have become much more prominent recently as more guests are carrying cell phones and possibly trying to take pictures while riding. Universal has warning signs about securing objects and advises their employees to watch for items that may pose a problem.
