Are International Parks Outpacing the U.S. in Creativity?

Hey, friends! Welcome to our Disney Debate, a staple of our Saturday Disney entertainment. If you’ve been keeping an eye on the international Disney Parks lately, you may have noticed a surprising common opinion circling the internet underbelly. Some Disney fans believe the international parks are surpassing their U.S. counterparts in terms of originality and creative design. While Walt Disney World and Disneyland remain iconic staples with their own legacy, it’s the parks in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Paris that are truly leading the charge in innovative storytelling and groundbreaking attractions. With each new land or ride, these overseas parks are showcasing a boldness and freshness that feels like it’s been missing from the domestic lineup in recent years.

Take Tokyo DisneySea, for example, which is often praised as the crown jewel of the Disney Parks family. Its layered theming, one-of-a-kind attractions like Journey to the Center of the Earth, and stunning attention to detail have made it a destination all its own. Meanwhile, Shanghai Disneyland’s TRON Lightcycle Power Run was so impressive that it had to be imported to Magic Kingdom years later, and even then, it arrived without some of the original flair. Recent additions, such as Fantasy Springs in Tokyo, promised entirely new ride systems and storytelling angles, rather than recycled concepts from parks abroad. The new area of the park delivered on this concept with rave reviews and a uniqueness that is drawing in Disney fans from all over the globe to experience it, particularly the themed dining. Similarly, World of Frozen has had a similar impact at Hong Kong Disneyland, and plans for the new expansion at Disneyland Paris are just as exciting.

In contrast, U.S. parks often lean heavily on cloning attractions coast to coast or borrowing from international success stories after the fact. While this can be great for accessibility (not everyone can travel to Asia or Europe), it does make the domestic parks feel somewhat like copy-and-paste experiences. For Disney fans who crave that feeling of wonder and discovery, it’s starting to feel like the real frontier of imagination lies beyond American borders. What do you think? Are you more excited by Disney’s international innovation than here at home?
