When it comes to Disney characters, I tend to sort them into two loose categories. There are the mainstream stars who float in and out of our Disney experiences depending on the season, the park, or the latest release. Then there are the niche characters, usually tied closely to a single film and living quietly in the background of Disney history. Many of the older classics fall into that second group. Think Robin Hood, Dumbo, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland. Timeless, beloved, but not always front and center. Of course, there are exceptions, like Peter Pan, which somehow continues to capture new generations thanks to spin-offs and extended storytelling that keep the magic alive.
Within that niche group, though, there are a few characters who have completely escaped the limits of their original films and become icons in their own right. Marie from The Aristocats is absolutely one of them. This fancy little kitten has somehow won over Disney fans who have never even seen the movie, purely on charm, sass, and an unmistakable aesthetic. Anytime Disney releases Marie-focused merchandise, not Aristocats as a whole, but Marie herself, it sells fast and creates a buzz. She is proof that sometimes charisma really is enough.

That popularity hit home for me last year while walking through EPCOT with a devoted Marie fan and her daughter. I was casually asked where the Marie store was in the France pavilion, and I genuinely stopped in my tracks. I did a full mental inventory. Souvenirs de France occasionally carries Aristocats items, though character merch there is usually minimal at best. Festival booths sometimes bring a temporary uptick in themed items. But a dedicated Marie space? Surely I would have noticed that. As we searched the pavilion together, the only clearly defined character merchandise area was the Ratatouille kiosk near Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. After checking every store and coming up empty-handed, I was left with a question I could not shake. Should the France Pavilion have more of a presence for Marie?

The more I thought about it, the more it felt like a missed opportunity. Marie is Parisian at heart. She is stylish, confident, charming, and effortlessly on theme for the France pavilion. Her connection to the country represented there feels natural and timeless. Is the hesitation simply that there is only room for one headlining character? Ratatouille undeniably changed the game for this pavilion, turning it into a must-visit destination anchored by a blockbuster attraction. Even Belle and Beauty & the Beast never quite pulled crowds the same way. But still, something feels missing. And no, I am not letting go of my dreams of a Ratatouille dining experience like the one at Disneyland Paris. It is Marie.
So I will throw it to you. I do not know a single Disney fan who does not have a Marie lover somewhere in their inner circle. Is it time to give this beloved kitten a more permanent merchandise home in EPCOT’s France Pavilion? A small corner, a curated collection, something that lets Marie shine where she so clearly belongs. I have a feeling she would be right at home.
