Hey, friends! Lately, I’ve had my eye on our Disney first-timers. You know who you are. The planners with fresh countdown apps, the ones double-checking dining reservations, the families staring at park maps like they’re studying for an exam. Even though I grew up with Disney, mostly at Disneyland, I have had plenty of friends and family members share their first-time worries with me before their trips.
So today felt like the perfect time to bust a few common myths for anyone feeling a little anxious about their upcoming visit. And let me say this clearly: it is completely normal to be excited and nervous at the same time. That just means it matters to you. Let’s take a deep breath together and talk through it.
The Crowds Will Ruin It
Yes, Disney can be busy. It is one of the most visited vacation destinations in the world. But busy does not automatically mean miserable. Disney manages crowd flow better than almost anywhere else, and if you head into your day with the right expectations, a bit of patience, and maybe a game or two ready for the attraction queues, those wait times can turn into surprisingly sweet bonding moments.
Some of my favorite conversations have happened while zigzagging through a queue. It is all about perspective. If you expect perfection, you might feel frustrated. If you expect shared experiences, you will find them everywhere.
Pooh Sized Guests Cannot Ride the Rides
Oh, friends. I understand this one deeply. As someone who has been through seasons of being extremely overweight, I carried this fear for years. And I can honestly tell you that in all my visits, across all my different dress sizes, I have never once been unable to ride something because of my size.
Were there moments of slight discomfort? Sure. Some restraints can feel snug, especially the pull-down chest ones, if you have a fuller bust. But never once was it a deal breaker. Most guests will look back on this fear afterward and think, why did I worry so much? And if a particular attraction does not feel right, it will likely be the exception, not the rule. There is always something else magical waiting for you around the corner.
You Have to Rope Drop to Make the Most of It
Now, some of us love a rope drop strategy. There is a certain thrill to being there as the park opens. But is it mandatory? Absolutely not.
You do not have to wake your family before sunrise and stand in the dark to justify the cost of your ticket. This is your vacation. If your crew functions better with a slower morning and a relaxed start, that is perfectly fine. Disney is not a competition. You are not graded at the end of the day on how many rides you accomplished. Sustainable fun is the goal. Choose the rhythm that works for your family.
Everything Will Be So Expensive We Will Never Recover
Disney can be expensive. That part is true. But so much of your spending is already handled in the big items like accommodation and tickets. From there, you have far more control than you might think.
You do not need character dining at every meal or a suitcase full of merchandise to have a wonderful trip. Disney does an incredible job of offering options at different price points. Quick service meals, free entertainment, complimentary transportation, and simple shared treats can be just as special. With a little planning and some mindful choices, you can absolutely keep the magic alive within your budget.
We Need a Rental Car
This is one of the first expenses I usually suggest cutting. At Disneyland, everything is wonderfully walkable. At Walt Disney World, the transportation system is part of the experience. Buses, boats, Skyliner gondolas, and the monorail connect the property in ways that make driving feel unnecessary for most guests.
Organizing airport transfers is easier than you might think, and skipping a rental car saves you the cost of parking, fuel, and the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads. Let someone else handle the driving while you focus on enjoying the magic. If you do want to explore beyond Disney for a day or two, you can always rent a car just for those specific days.
If you are feeling anxious about an upcoming trip, tell me what’s on your mind. Chances are, you are not alone. And if you are still in the planning stages, do not forget to reach out to our friends at Dreams Unlimited Travel for an obligation-free quote to see where your budget stands.
You have got this, friends. Your first Disney trip is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about creating memories that are uniquely yours.
