What To Do on a Disney Day When Everything Goes Wrong

Hey, friends. This is one of those Disney topics that almost feels a little taboo to talk about. We spend so much time dreaming, planning, and counting down the days to our Disney vacations that the idea of anything going wrong is something most of us would rather avoid. But the truth is, it happens. And how you handle it can be the difference between a day that feels ruined and one that turns into an unexpected highlight.

If you visit Disney often enough, eventually you will run into a day when things simply refuse to work the way you hoped. You might have the perfect plan with Lightning Lanes, dining reservations, and backup ideas ready to go, but none of us can control the Disney universe. When things start falling apart, it can feel pretty disheartening.

I have had one of those days where it seemed like everything went wrong. A ride closed after I secured a Lightning Lane, another attraction broke down just as we reached the front of the line, and a delayed dining reservation threw the entire schedule into chaos. We finally settled in for Fantasmic! hoping to end the night on a high note, only for a storm to roll in and cancel the show entirely. By the end of it, the day felt completely ruined.

Looking back now, my slightly older and wiser self knows exactly what I should have done much earlier. Change direction.

One of my favorite Disney memories came from doing exactly that. While visiting Disneyland Paris with my mother, it unexpectedly began to snow. Instead of forcing our plan to work, we ducked into a nearby restaurant and ended up chatting with other guests, laughing with strangers, and learning how to make the perfect margarita from the best bartender I’ve ever met. Eventually, the snow passed, and we returned to the park with a completely new plan that fit the day.

Not long after that, I faced another difficult park day back stateside. This time, I remembered Paris and did something different. I threw the plan out the window, and we switched parks. Just that simple change completely shifted the day. With only a few steps across the Disneyland aisle, the rain seemed less destructive, the vibe was different, the lines were shorter, and we felt like we were achieving something.

You do not always need to go that far, but the lesson still applies. When a Disney day starts to unravel, do not be afraid to abandon the plan and create a new one. Sometimes the best memories come from the moments you never planned at all.
