Earlier this week, Disney CEO Bob Iger dropped a hint that was originally overlooked at the Morgan Stanley’s Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in New York. When addressing the massive blockbuster and cultural success of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, Iger stated, “No, we haven’t had a chance to build a ride. Though I’m sure there are people who are working on it.”
While this could just be Iger’s own speculation, it doesn’t seem to be out of the realm of possibilities that an attraction could be in the works. It also seems unlikely that he would be clueless about what would most certainly be a massively popular attraction.
Iger then addressed the success of the Black Panther meet-and-greet in Disneyland, saying that guests are waiting up to an hour.
That being said, Iger has been known to drop major information bombs that never come to light, or are taking so long that the Disney community is beginning to give up on them. For example, at a Walt Disney Company annual shareholder’s meeting, Iger was asked by a 6-year-old child whether Disney’s Hollywood Studios would change its name. Iger said to other executives, “Have we announced that?” He later followed up with, “It’s not announced. We used to be MGM Studios, we changed to Hollywood Studios and we’re doing some significant work there right now that I guess will result in a name change.” That shareholder’s meeting was three years ago, and despite a ton of speculation and rumors, there still has been no name change.
Whether it was a Freudian slip, or his own genuine speculation, telling a major media conference that there could potentially be a Black Panther-themed attraction in the works is big news.
