Tips for using FastPass at Disneyland

By Tom Bell

With all the talk of Magic Bands and FastPass+ lately, I thought it might be good to remind folks that the Disneyland Resort is still using the "classic" paper FastPass system and maybe pass on a few tips.

Currently FastPass is offered at Disneyland Park on the following attractions: Autopia, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Indiana Jones Adventure, Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain and Star Tours: The Adventures Continue.

FastPass is offered at Disney California Adventure on the following attractions: California Screamin', Goofy's Sky School, Grizzly River Run, Radiator Springs Racers, Soarin' Over California and Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of Disney's FastPass system during your trip to the Disneyland Resort:

Scan the barcode

This one's easy.  Make your life (and the life of the person behind you) a little better by remembering that your ticket needs to go into the machine barcode first.

Use a runner

You don't have to scan your own ticket.  Send Dad or one of the older teens ahead to get FastPasses for everyone.

Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure are close enough that hopping back and forth is an option.  Just don't overdo it.  The great thing is that, while you have to have used your ticket for entry to be able to get a FastPass, it doesn't have to be THAT specific Park.  You and your family can go through the turnstiles at Disneyland Park, then hand your ticket to your 17-year-old sprinter who can take them over to California Adventure to get you coveted Radiator Springs Racers FastPasses.

The other great thing is that the two systems are not connected, so your Radiator Springs Racers FastPass won't affect your ability to get a Space Mountain FastPass.

Make a plan

Just because you're using FastPass, doesn't mean you need to constantly criss-cross the Park. Plan ahead just a bit and save yourself some walking.  For example:

Send your runner to Space Mountain, while you and the little ones ride the Astro Orbitor.  Once the runner returns, wait for your FastPass return time by hitting Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Innoventions or StarTrader.

Group your wait for your Indiana Jones Adventure return time with a ride on the Jungle Cruise and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Know when you can get another FastPass

I think one of the best tips I can give you is to know when you can get another FastPass.  Remember, you are eligible to get another FastPass at the start time of your current FastPass, but the most you have to wait is 2 hours.  Of course, Disney prints it on the FastPass to make it even easier.

I hope these few tips help you make your next Disneyland Resort vacation even more magical.  If you still want MORE tips, be sure to check out HydroGuy's "Getting the Most Out of FastPass During High Season" on the DISboards.
