The BIG Disney Park Reference in Fantastic 4: First Steps

…that you can’t get out of your head.

Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which premiered in theaters on July 25th, includes a subtle but meaningful tribute to a classic Disneyland attraction: the PeopleMover.

In an early montage sequence, the film features the instrumental track “Nation on Wheels” by George Bruns, originally composed for a Disneyland TV special, A Gala Day in Disneyland, and later featured as part of the Magic Skyway attraction at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. Ultimately, the piece was incorporated in the background music for Disneyland’s PeopleMover attraction when it debuted in Tomorrowland in 1967.

It was one of those moments in the film that made any Disney Parks fan familiar with theme park history do a double take and think, “Hold on… did they really just reference that?”

Though the PeopleMover stopped operating at Disneyland in 1995 (and has been sorely missed ever since), its elevated track still weaves through the land, a visible reminder of the attraction’s past.

While the film does not visually depict the PeopleMover, the choice of “Nation on Wheels” has reignited conversation among Disney Parks fans, especially those who have long hoped for the ride’s return. The original ride system was removed due to outdated technology and infrastructure limitations, but rumors of a revival have persisted for years.

Fittingly, in light of this new reference, Disneyland Park is currently offering limited-time menus and meet-and-greets in Tomorrowland featuring all four members of the Fantastic Four and their robot assistant, H.E.R.B.I.E. The location and timing align with the film’s strong visual ties to the 1960s Tomorrowland space-age aesthetic, which is reflected in the movie’s retro-futuristic design, technology, and costuming.

Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps opened to $118 million domestically, making it Marvel’s first $100M+ debut of 2025, and amassed $218 million globally, marking the studio’s biggest opening of the year.

Positive feedback from audiences represent a revitalization of the Fantastic Four franchise and a confident comeback for Marvel. This momentum could inspire Disney to expand or reintroduce park experiences tied to the team… especially as their retro-futuristic aesthetic aligns perfectly with Tomorrowland. With Disneyland’s Tomorrowland long due for updates, the film’s success presents a timely opportunity to integrate more experiences inspired by Marvel’s first family.

Though no official announcements have been made regarding a PeopleMover revival, the musical easter egg in Fantastic Four: First Steps has added fuel to the speculation. For many Disneyland enthusiasts, it serves as a hopeful reminder of Tomorrowland’s storied past… and what could still return in the future! What do you think of the vintage reference?
