Visitors to the Disneyland Resort will soon have fewer options for lodging when planning their vacation, as the Anaheim City Council as voted to eliminate all short-term home rentals.
The Council met for over five hours Wednesday, hearing debate from both sides.
Owners of the rental properties argued that they’ve improved the properties and look of the neighborhoods, plus provided tax income for the city. Opponents complained that some visitors were having parties, littering and taking up residents’ parking spots, adding, “businesses don’t belong in our residential neighborhoods.”
After Anaheim began issuing permits to short-term rental home owners in 2014, the number of permits grew to nearly 400 in a short period, prompting the city to put a moratorium on the permits in 2015 and consider further regulations.
Owners of the homes paid a $250 registration fee when filing for the permit and guests pay same 15% tax they would at a hotel.
The Council discussed putting more regulations on the short-term rentals, or just a complete ban. The vote was 3 to 2 for a complete ban. The ban goes into effect in 18 months and the 363 registered vacation home owners will have until then to cease operating.
