Shocking Moment Lightning Strikes Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World

A Disney Food Blog reporter who was visiting the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World was standing in front of Cinderella Castle as lightning struck early Tuesday evening.

In the video below, you can hear how loud the strike was as the reporter fumbled their phone when they were startled. Yikes!

If you’ve ever visited Walt Disney World during the summer months, you know that not only is it usually hotter than fire, but there is a thunderstorm practically every afternoon. Some of the thunderstorms are worse than others, but, thank goodness, Walt Disney World was carefully designed with guest safety in mind, and that includes protection from Florida’s frequent thunderstorms.

The entire resort is equipped with an extensive network of lightning rods strategically placed across the property. These rods are installed on buildings, attractions, and even iconic structures, such as Cinderella Castle, to safely redirect lightning strikes away from guests and into the ground. It’s part of Disney’s broader lightning protection system, which helps keep visitors safe during sudden storms.

When a thunderstorm rolls into Magic Kingdom, it doesn’t have to ruin your fun. In fact, it’s a great chance to experience the park in a different way. First, head indoors to enjoy classic attractions that stay open during storms. Rides like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Mickey’s PhilharMagic, and “it’s a small world”, and many more, are all inside and perfect for riding while you wait out the rain.

This is also a great time to take shelter in a restaurant for a leisurely meal or a favorite snack. Popular spots include Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café, Columbia Harbour House, and Pecos Bill Tall Tale Café, which all offer tasty food and a dry place to sit.

Rainy weather can also clear out the crowds, which means shorter wait times once the storm passes. Don’t forget to check out the shops on Main Street, U.S.A., they’re connected indoors, making it easy to browse souvenirs without stepping back into the rain. We must warn you, though, they get crowded when it’s raining!

Just be sure to bring a poncho or umbrella, stay aware of lightning warnings, and make the most of the magical atmosphere that a rainy day in the park can bring!
