2014 saw some interesting news coming from the world of Disney. From tragic deaths to tragic stupidity, here are the top 10 news stories on the DIS news page for 2014:
10 – (10/26/14) – Animal Kingdom performers fired for refusing to wear soiled costumes. When a group of performers refused to wear clean costumes that had come in contact with soiled ones, they were fired.
9 – (2/27/14) – Hub expansion announced at the Magic Kingdom. There is no question that the expansion of the hub at Disney’s Magic Kingdom will help with the traffic on Main St. The question lately though, is how much more construction can people take??
8 – (10/24/14) – Sorcerer Mickey Hat to be removed from Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I, for one, was thrilled to hear this. I never liked it and I’ll be happy to have an unobstructed view of the Chinese theater again!
7 – (7/10/14) – Magic Kingdom guest gets top of fingers cut off on Pirates of the Caribbean. Let’s be honest – this guy should have been a finalist in this year’s Darwin Awards. You don’t put your hands in the water on a moving flume ride.
6 – (3/12/14) – Anna and Elsa meet and greet moving to the Magic Kingdom – and they took the 5 hour wait with them. Moving Anna and Elsa from the Norway pavilion at Epcot to Princess Fairy Tale hall in the Magic Kingdom was a good move, but good luck getting a FastPass for this experience.
5 – (12/7/2014) – Woman sues Disney claiming disability after falling from carousel horse. I’m always sorry to hear that someone was hurt at Walt Disney World – but I’ve been doing this long enough to know that a lawsuit is never far behind when it happens.
4 – (12/15/14) – Woman dead after car collides with Disney bus – Subsequent to this article being posted, we learned more about the woman who was killed. She was 29 year old Amelia Davis – an avid Disney fan and graduate of the Rosen School of Hospitality at the University of Central Florida. She was a cast member at Disney’s Coronado Springs, and was likely coming home from work the night the accident happened. Please continue to keep her family and friends in your thoughts.
3 – (4/2/2014) – Changes to Disney’s FastPass to include Park Hopping. Unfortunately, this announcement did little to quell the displeasure that many people feel over the new FastPass+ system.
2 – (9/12/14) – Epcot’s Maelstrom to be replaced with FROZEN-themed attraction. No news story evoked as much response from the Disney fan community as this announcement – both good and bad. For some, the announcement came as a welcome to change to an attraction that many felt was in desperate need of a facelift. For many others, it was the start of ‘Frozen’ burn-out.
1 – (11/1/14) – Fire at Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom. For the second time in less than a year, a New Fantasyland attraction caught fire after a fireworks show at the Magic Kingdom (The Voyage of the Little Mermaid caught fire after a fireworks show in February 2014). No significant damage was done to the attraction, and it reopened the next day – but that didn’t stop the internet from proclaiming it had burned to the ground!
