New Details Unveiled From Big Thunder Mountain’s Lengthy Refurbishment

Hang onto your hats and glasses, because we just got some exciting news about Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! The “wildest ride in the wilderness” is currently undergoing a lengthy refurbishment, and Disney finally pulled back the curtain earlier today to reveal what fans can expect once the coaster reopens at Magic Kingdom in 2026.

The Legend Lives On

Disney has confirmed that the fan-favorite coaster will return with refreshed storytelling centered around the infamous Barnabas T. Bullion, the gold-obsessed founder of the Big Thunder Mining Company. True to Disney legend, Bullion’s hunger for riches has stirred up the wrath of the mountain itself, causing supernatural disturbances and mysterious cave-ins that plague anyone daring enough to ride the rails.

Thunderous New Scene

One of the most exciting reveals is the introduction of a brand-new show scene: the Rainbow Caverns. (This scene is inspired by the Rainbow Caverns of Disneyland’s early Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland!)

Deep inside the mountain, guests will journey through glowing cave formations and shimmering pools that sparkle with radiant colors. While the caverns filled with iridescent stalactites and stalagmites are beautiful, they carry an uneasy edge; echoes of the mountain’s rumbling suggest that riders may not be welcome in these glittering depths for long.

With a loud crack of thunder, the Rainbow Caverns will transform into the Red Caverns!

This new scene is part of what Disney is calling a “mountain-top to cavern-deep refurbishment”. Disney has also updated attraction’s description from a “haunted gold mine” to an “active gold mine.”

Construction on Big Thunder Mountain has been moving steadily since the attraction closed in January 2025. Crews have replaced track, rebuilt sections of rockwork, and begun vehicle clearance testing, signaling that the railroad is getting closer to its grand reopening. While Disney hasn’t announced an exact date, current timelines point to spring 2026, with hints that the runaway trains might even be back on the tracks a little sooner.

Will we also see something like dynamite-filled cavern lift hill over at Disneyland? Disney hints there’s even more magic to discover as we anticipate Big Thunder’s 2026 return, but we’ll have to hang on to our hats and glasses a little longer [stay tuned]…
