When Pixar’s Turning Red premiered in 2022, it resonated deeply with fans for its heartfelt storytelling, nostalgic 2000s-era style, and rich cultural setting. Yet, in a world where Disney films are infused into the parks left and right, this one has seen a surprisingly slow embrace when it comes to representation.

Sure, you might find some Panda Mei merch at the parks here and there (how about that 4*Town tour shirt that kept selling out?), but Disneyland got it RIGHT in the Better Together parade. I mean, just look at these character comparisons!
There’s also been meet & greet opportunities with Mei and her mom, Ming, during DCA’s Lunar New Year celebrations:
So why isn’t there more panda power in Florida? Here’s why it’s time for Mei and friends to shine — and how Disney World can bring the chaos, heart, and charm of Turning Red to life.
Why Turning Red Deserves a Stronger Park Presence
Turning Red has carved out a unique and passionate fanbase. Its coming-of-age story, set against the backdrop of early 2000s Toronto and Chinese-Canadian traditions adds fresh cultural texture to the Pixar lineup. Representation matters, and this story is one of the few Disney-Pixar entries centered on an Asian protagonist and family. Additionally, the themes of identity, friendship, and the complexities of growing up are the epitome of Pixar’s signature emotional storytelling: personal, yet universally relatable.
The film is a merchandiser’s dream. From red panda plushies to retro-style 4*Town concert tees, there’s enormous potential for more themed merchandise. The music, especially 4*Town’s boy band hits, has serious staying power and has even charted in real life. Disney even included the fictional boy band in a recent Instagram post:
The film’s aesthetic is colorful, bubbly, slightly chaotic, and would perfectly fit into Disney’s vibrant park spaces. Imagine red lanterns, panda-themed snack carts, and pop-up 4*Town photo ops.
Imagine a short-format live show in EPCOT’s World Showcase – perhaps in the Canada Pavilion or the America Gardens Theatre – featuring 4*Town performances with character cameos (similar to the Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Live summertime show from a few years back). Or how about a classic Disney dark ride retelling of the coming-of-age story? We all know EPCOT could use a few more of those!
Side Note: To be honest, I was surprised to hear Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster’s re-theme would be The Muppets. I always imagined that if Aerosmith ever went away, Disney would feature another chart-topping artist of their own, such as Powerline (A Goofy Movie) or 4*Town (Turning Red).
Disneyland vs. Disney World
Disneyland knocked it out of the park at Pixar Fest. Mei’s red panda character in the Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration! parade is perfectly stylized, with large expressive eyes, fluffy fur texture, and accurate proportions that balance realism and cartoon charm.
In comparison, Walt Disney World has yet to debut a Turning Red meet-and-greet or parade float of any kind. I don’t know about you, but I’m more than ready to meet Mei in her red panda form and celebrate what I truly believe is one of Pixar’s most underrated gems.
What do you think? How would you like to see Turning Red represented at Walt Disney World?
