I'll be honest when I say that I was just a bit hesitant planning a Mother's Day brunch around a Disney buffet.  To say that Disney's buffets can be hit or miss is being kind.  Especially when the price is approaching $50 per person, my expectations were a bit high.

The venue for the Mother's Day Brunch is the convention area located between the Canadian and U. K. Pavilions.  This was the location of Millennium Village in 2000/2001.  It has since been converted to a space used primarily for large groups and special events.

Our reservations for brunch were 12:15, and when we reserved our space, we were specifically told to be sure to be 'on time'.  Upon arrival, we were advised that they were running 30 minutes behind.  Disney has turned the concept of 'hurry up an wait' into an art form.  I was also afraid that this was a harbinger for the rest of the event - I'm happy to say that I was wrong.

The cavernous venue was tastefully decorated around the theme of a medieval castle - complete with a wandering lute player.  Mom's first reaction upon entering the space was "this is beautiful" - we were off to a good start.  Once we were seated, we tried to absorb the sheer number of 'food stations' that were located around the pavilion.  On either side were identical stations offering pasta (Penne prima vera with pesto and Tortellini Carbonara), omelets, Mickey waffles (with fresh fruit), and carving stations with garlic cinnamon pork loin, and New York Strip loin.  In the center of the building were two large stations - one offering crepes made to order as well as desserts, the other featuring everything from fresh salads and homemade breads, to scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage and bacon, chicken marsala, herb buttered salmon, crab corn soup as well as an excellent minestrone that qualified more a stew than a soup, and host of other assorted foods.  They also had an area for kids where they could decorate cookies to give to Mom - a very cute idea, and from the look of the crowd around the table, a popular one as well.

Included with the brunch was a complimentary glass of champagne.  Beer and wine were available at extra cost - a heavily inflated cost at that.  A bottle of Berringers White Zinfandel (which runs about $12 - $15 a bottle locally) was a ridiculous $34 a bottle here.  Soft drinks and orange juice are included with the meal.

As I mentioned earlier, I had grave concerns about trusting our Mother's Day meal to a Disney buffet, but I'm happy to report that those concerns were unfounded.  Not only was this the most extensive buffet I had ever seen, the food was somewhere north of fantastic.  Carved meats were well prepared and of noticeable quality, the pasta dishes were superb (the aforementioned Tortellini Carbonara was particularly good).  Even the Salmon was above average (especially considering that buffet salmon is usually dry).

I even have to mention the service - which was excellent.  Buffet service is usually pretty standard, but our server was excellent in making sure that our drinks were never empty and that our table was cleared of dishes in between trips to the various buffet stations.

There were some comments on our discussion boards that people thought the price for this buffet was too high.  I thought so as well, until we experienced it.  This is one of those occasions where Disney charges a lot, but absolutely delivered on the experience.  Most importantly of all, my mother loved it!!  She was overwhelmed with the array of offerings, as well as the quality of the food.  Since pleasing her was job #1 for this visit, I can say without hesitation that the brunch was an unqualified success.

If you find yourself at Walt Disney World for Mother's Day - I highly recommend this brunch - neither you, or your Mom, will be disappointed.
