Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America at the Magic Kingdom permanently closed on July 6, 2025 to make way for Piston Peak (Cars Land) and Villains Land. We don’t have timelines for either project, but we suspect major construction will continue for the next several years. This will be the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history and a major change to Liberty Square and Frontierland’s landscape. While the closures are still recent, there are signs of change popping up all over the Magic Kingdom.

The entrance of the Liberty Belle is roped off with construction walls continuing along part of Rivers America. We’re not sure why Disney security guards were at the entrance – maybe hopeful guests petitioning to bring back Rivers of America?

We’re now seeing reports that Rivers of America has been completely drained since taking these photos but we’re pleased the construction walls stop at the boardwalk across from Liberty Tree Tavern. This will likely change as construction continues but it’s oddly comforting to still be able to see Tom Sawyer Island.

Disney has yet to confirm official plans for the Liberty Belle, but it’s been seen parked at a service dock still within the park. Personally, I’d love to see the Liberty Belle repurposed at Piston Peak!

The Hall of Presidents reopened after over a 6-month refurbishment to add a new President Trump animatronic following the January inauguration.

The Prairie Outpost & Supply has re-opened after becoming a Chapel Hats store complete with a wide-range of hats for both kids and adults with customizable options. Some of the hat options include – cowboy hats, sun hats, fedoras, berets, baseball hats, and fascinators.

I was a little surprised there was no Disney merchandise in the entire store but I did overhear a cast member talking about specially designed hats coming out for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. I’m hoping for more options like this or customizable ears and monogramming.

Last but certainly not least, the Froniterland Railroad Station is closed until further notice. This has also changed the train route so that the Magic Kingdom train no longer makes a full-circle loop but goes both forwards and backwards, avoiding the Frontierland and Rivers of America stretch of the park. This adjustment of the train will likely go on for as long as it takes to build Piston Peak and Villains Land. While change and closures are hard, I’m glad the train is not closed completely. Even if riding the train is not a Disney World must-do for you, hearing the iconic train whistle is a fond memory of visiting the Magic Kingdom.
Be sure to let us know in the comments what you think about the current changes to Liberty Square and Frontierland! Personally, I’m still waiting on a much-needed Tiana’s Palace restaurant.
