Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular Returns to Magic Kingdom

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party began its 2025 season last night at Magic Kingdom, bringing back the event’s exclusive fireworks show, Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular. This production, first introduced in 2019, continues to serve as the Halloween party’s signature nighttime entertainment.

Jack Skellington Hosts

Perhaps the most exciting element of this show is the massive Jack Skellington puppet, who hosts this spectacular.

He towers above the stage in front of Cinderella Castle. His presence is both theatrical and imposing, and he provides narration throughout the story. The technical execution of the puppet remains a highlight, with smooth movements.

Psst, you can get an even better look at the puppet during Disney Jollywood Nights, as they utilize the same puppet in a live sing-a-long production inside the Hyperion Theater!

Not-So-Scary Storyline

The spectacular’s plot follows Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy as they explore a haunted house filled with ghosts and Disney Villains. The show alternates between lighter, playful segments and more dramatic villain-centered sequences, giving it a varied pace from start to finish.

The fireworks are extensive, with bursts spanning nearly 180 degrees around the hub, making it one of the broader nighttime displays at Magic Kingdom.

Projection mapping on Cinderella Castle changes the façade into haunted scenes, jack-o’-lanterns, and villainous backdrops. Added layers of lasers, strobe lighting, and atmospheric effects enhance the visuals.

— One of the best moments is when the castle is transformed into a bone palace.

The soundtrack includes The Haunted Mansion‘s Grim Grinning Ghosts, This is Halloween from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and villain themes, arranged with cinematic instrumentals. The timing of wide-firework barrages with orchestral swells gives the show its most impactful moments.

Viewing Recommendations

For the clearest view of projections and the Jack puppet, the best area is between the Partners statue and the castle hub (that’s where we landed last night!). While viewing further back in the hub or down Main Street U.S.A. offers a broader view of the fireworks, you also lose detail in the stage and projection elements.

If only the fireworks part matters to you, try watching from Tomorrowland and Fantasyland for close-up pyro in the sky!

Comparison to HalloWishes

Many long-time partygoers still recall HalloWishes which ran from 2005 through 2018, which featured a straightforward villain-focused fireworks display and musical medley. While some miss the pure fireworks punch of HalloWishes, Not-So-Spooky Spectacular differentiates itself with more advanced technology, projection mapping, and character-driven storytelling.

Rather than a fireworks-heavy show in the style of HalloWishes, Not-So-Spooky Spectacular blends stagecraft and projections, along with the fireworks, making it more theatrical than its predecessor. Though, for the sake of creepy critiques, I would love to see it plussed up even more in the future; maybe with Jack’s pup, Zero, flying along Tink’s usual flightpath, as well as incorporating more songs and visuals from The Nightmare Before Christmas or Disney’s archive of spooky animated shorts, like The Skeleton Dance, The Haunted House, or Trick-or Treat.

Overall, if you’re a fan of Halloween, the Haunted Mansion, and The Nightmare Before Christmas, you can’t really miss this show during your party night. Just make sure you squeeze in some trick-or-treating after the show! Happy Halloween!
