Feeling Conflicted About Disney / ABC’s Recent Actions

I usually try to keep politics separate from my love of Disney, but sometimes that separation is impossible. Disney is not only a company that creates stories and entertainment, but it is also one of the most powerful media corporations in the world. That position makes its decisions deeply tied to politics, public life, and culture. The recent suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! shows exactly how entangled those worlds can become.

Disney/ABC placed Kimmel’s show on indefinite hiatus after he made jokes about President Trump that were connected to the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The jokes struck some as offensive, especially because of the way President Donald Trump was tied to the situation. Affiliates like Nexstar voiced strong objections, and the FCC stepped in with warnings that such content might run afoul of broadcasters’ obligation to serve the “public interest.” Yet no law was broken, and nothing was proven unlawful. Despite that, Disney pulled Kimmel from the air under the combined weight of regulatory pressure and station groups threatening to stop carrying the show.

At its core, this is not only about corporate risk management. It cuts to the heart of free expression. Comedians have always had the right under the First Amendment to satirize, ridicule, and criticize political leaders. Late-night hosts in particular have built entire careers on sharp political commentary. Sometimes those jokes are biting, occasionally tasteless, and sometimes factually questionable. But the point is that free speech protects them. The FCC does have rules to enforce, especially around obscenity or clear violations of broadcast standards, but this situation feels different. Instead of a neutral regulatory body enforcing clear guidelines, it feels like a politically charged intervention designed to silence a critic of the sitting president.

If this were handled fairly, the FCC could have issued a warning and Kimmel could have been given the opportunity to clarify or defend what he said. If parts of the joke were factually questionable, Kimmel could have been asked to explain his reasoning. That would at least respect the balance between regulation and free expression. Instead, what happened looks more like a political power move: the president took offense, pressure filtered down through the FCC, and Disney was told to fall in line. The outcome is not an open debate about standards or accuracy. The outcome is silencing.

And that is the most alarming part. Disney, a company that has long been a symbol of creativity, imagination, and bold ideas, did not defend one of its own creators or stand up for free expression. They folded quickly, and in doing so sent the message that government officials can lean on corporations to quiet voices they do not like. That precedent should concern everyone, regardless of political views.

Fans are noticing. On Reddit’s Disney community, people are saying they have canceled Disney+, stopped watching Disney-owned media, or even canceled Disney Parks vacations. I am not at that point myself, because I still believe visiting supports the thousands of people in Central Florida who work at the parks and depend on Disney for their livelihoods. But I cannot ignore the larger picture. I am now asking myself, “What am I supporting when I give Disney my money?”

The larger moral question is whether consumers should pressure Disney with their wallets until the company proves it will stand firm against political intimidation. I love Disney, but I do not want to support a company that caves when the government decides a joke went too far. This is not just about Jimmy Kimmel. It is about whether one of the most influential media companies in the world is willing to stand up for the basic principles of free expression. If Disney bends the knee now, it risks changing what it represents for everyone who believes in its stories.
